NJ Civil Law Division Case-Type Filter Tool
What am I looking at?
You've probably used the New Jersey Judiciary's official eCourts lookup tool to search Civil Law Division cases (and if you haven't, you can get a free account at the link below). So it's fair to ask: why do we need this tool?
Here's why: the official lookup lets you search only by docket number or by a party's name. But even though every case has a 3-digit "case type" code (for example, 005 = Civil Rights, 609 = Defamation, etc.), eCourts does not let you filter cases by that code.
In other words, eCourts can't do searches like: "Show me all Civil Rights cases filed in Passaic County." That's what this tool is for.
Use this page to pick a county (or statewide) and a case type, and it will give you a clean list of matching docket numbers. Then you take those docket numbers over to eCourts to see the full docket details.
Think of it like this: eCourts is where you read the case. This tool is how you find the cases worth reading.
One important note: this tool currently covers 2024 filings only. NJFOG paid the Judiciary hundreds of dollars for this dataset. If you'd like to see this expanded (2025 filings, and possibly even backfilled to 2023), the best way to help is to donate using the button to the right.
This tool is a project of the New Jersey Foundation for Open Government (NJFOG) . It's hosted on CivicFoyer.org for technical reasons.
